St. Lucie County is currently seeking a private partner to help develop 20 acres of waterfront land inside the Port of Fort Pierce.
The Board of County Commissioners recently issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the development of the 20 acres of county-owned land inside the 90-acre Port complex. Less than three miles from the mouth of the deepwater Fort Pierce Inlet, the parcel offers unobstructed access to the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean. The site is thought by industry experts to be the ideal for the development of an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facility for so-called megayachts, which, in fact, have made calls on the Port in increasing numbers in recent years.
The fact that the parcel has never been developed also lends the advantage that the new facility can be purpose-built specifically for this activity, creating cost-savings and efficiencies. St. Lucie County’s goal is straightforward: Through a public/private partnership, create an enduring source of economic activity that will generate high-paying, long-term jobs within the community.
St. Lucie County and the City of Fort Pierce are finalizing more than $7.3 million worth of improvements to Second Street leading into the Port area. This major construction project includes improved drainage, stormwater retention, reconstructed and widened roads, expanded utilities; sidewalks and lighting.
The Port of Fort Piece is one of seven deep-water, seaports on Florida’s east coast. The Port area is in close proximity to the Treasure Coast International Airport and Business Park, with its expanding US Customs facility and active Foreign Trade Zone.
