The City of Fort Pierce is actively monitoring Tropical Storm Helene and preparing for any potential impacts. Currently, Helene is expected to strengthen and approach hurricane intensity as it passes near the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula within the next few hours, where a Hurricane Warning is in effect. The storm is forecast to rapidly intensify as it moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Heavy rainfall is likely to cause significant local flash and urban flooding across parts of Florida, with isolated flooding possible in the Southeast, Southern Appalachians, and Tennessee Valley from Wednesday through Friday. Minor to isolated moderate river flooding may also occur.

Potential Impacts for the City of Fort Pierce:

  • Primary hazards: Heavy rain and strong winds in fast-moving squalls, primarily overnight Wednesday and throughout Thursday.
  • Rainfall: 1-4 inches, increasing the risk of localized flooding in areas that have experienced above-average rainfall in recent weeks.
  • Winds: Sustained winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts of 50-60 mph possible.

Sandbag Distribution
The City of Fort Pierce is offering free, self-serve sandbag stations for residents at the following locations: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dreamland Park (S. 25th St.), Pioneer Park (Ave M and N. 29th St.), Little Jim Bait & Tackle (601 N. Causeway), and Jaycee Park (South Hutchinson Island). Stations will be available starting today, September 25, 2024, at noon. Residents are asked to bring their own bags and shovels. Parks are open daily from dawn to dusk.

Solid Waste Collection
The Solid Waste Division will operate on its normal schedule. Residents are asked to avoid cutting down vegetation or starting major projects until the storm passes. No additional debris should be placed at the curb, as it may obstruct stormwater flow.

Streets and Drainage
The Streets and Drainage Division is actively working to clear stormwater systems of any obstructions to ensure they are operating at full capacity.

Communication
The City of Fort Pierce is committed to keeping residents safe and informed. Public notices will be posted on the city’s website, social media channels, and Fort Pierce TV Channel 27.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for St. Lucie County's Alert St. Lucie program to receive emergency notifications directly via phone, email, or text: www.stlucieco.gov/Alert.
