[ARCHIVED] Indian Hills Recreation Area Ribbon-Cutting to be held on February 23

Indian Hills Recreation Area

The Indian Hills Recreation Area is a joint stormwater project between the City of Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County.  This project retrofitted an existing drainage system that conveyed 1,242 acres of untreated urbanized runoff directly to the Indian River Lagoon.  The improvements provide a treatment train of six different “Best Management Practices” (BMPs) that are spread over the 60 acres of land providing an ecological friendly treatment facility.

Highlights of this project include an expansion of the 17 acre stormwater treatment lake, a walking and biking trail nearly a mile long, and 12 floating “islands,” which not only take care of fluctuating water levels, but also produce oxygen, remove nutrients and pesticides from the water, and provide a habitat for wildlife.

The Indian Hills Recreation Area is truly a partnership project that would not be possible without the assistance from the following participating agencies: Florida Communities Trust, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, South Florida Water Management District, St. Lucie River Issues Team, Treasure Coast Resource Conservation & Development Council and St. Lucie County.

Over the past several years, the City of Fort Pierce has been progressively addressing the water quality of the Indian River Lagoon and is continuously committed to keeping our precious waters clean. The City’s successful implementation of stormwater quality improvement projects have undoubtedly assisted with the cleanliness of our Indian River Lagoon.
